Yahukanun (John) — 11
The Death of Lazarus
A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bathany with his sisters, Maryam and Martha.
This is the Maryam who later poured the expensive perfume on 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick.
So the two sisters sent a message to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA telling Him, “Master, your dear friend is very sick.”
But when 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA heard about it He said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the Kabad of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH so that the Son of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH will receive honor from this.”
For 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA loved Martha, Maryam and Lazarus,
And 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA stayed where he was for the next two days.
Finally, 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA said to His Talmidym, “Let us go back to Yahudah.”
But His Talmidym objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Yahudah were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.
But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”
The Talmidym said, “Master, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!”
They thought 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA meant Lazarus had died.
So 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
And for your sakes, I am glad I was not there, for now you will really believe. Come, let us go and see him.”
Thomas, who is also called Twin, said to his fellow Talmidym, “Let us go, too and die with 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA.”
When 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA arrived at Bathany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
Bathany was only a few miles down the road from Yahushalam,
And many of the people had come to console Martha and Maryam in their loss.
When Martha got word that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA was coming, she went to meet him. But Maryam stayed in the house.
Martha said to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA, “Master, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH will give you whatever you ask.”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
And 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA told her, “I Am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.
Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
“Yes, Master,” she told 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA. “I have always believed you are Ha'Mashyach, the Son of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH, the one who has come into the world from 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH.”
Then she returned to Maryam. She called Maryam aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.”
So Maryam immediately went to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA.
For 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met Him.
When the people who were at the house consoling Maryam saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.
When Maryam arrived and saw 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA, she fell at His feet and said, “Master, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA, and He was deeply troubled.
And 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA asked them. “Where have you laid him?” They told 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA, “Master, come and see.”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA wept.
The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA loved him!”
But some said, “This man healed a blind man. He could have kept Lazarus from dying?”
For 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA was still angry as He arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
And 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA told them. “Roll the stone aside,” But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Master, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA responded, “Did I not tell you that you would see 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH’s Kabad if you believe?”
So they rolled the stone aside. Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA looked up to Shamaym and said, “ABBA, thank you for hearing me.
You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”
Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”
And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
The Plot to Kill YAHUSHA
Many of the people who were with Maryam believed in 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA when they saw this happen.
But some went to the Pharisees and told them what 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA had done.
Then the leading Kuhanym and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.
If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.”
Caiaphas, who was high Kuhan at that time, said, “You do not know what you are talking about!
Do you not realize that it is better for us that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
He did not say this on his own; as high Kuhan at that time he was led to prophesy that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA would die for the entire nation.
And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄_YAHUAH scattered around the world.
So from that time on, the Yahudym leaders began to plot 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA’s death.
As a result, 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA stopped his public ministry among the people and left Yahushalam. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Àphraim, and stayed there with his Talmidym.
It was now almost time for the Yahudym Passakh celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Yahushalam several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passakh began.
They kept looking for 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? Will He not come for Passakh, will he?”
Meanwhile, the leading Kuhanym and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏_YAHUSHA must report it immediately so they could arrest him.
